The .SE country-code top-level domain extension was set up in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its establishment, the registration procedure was quite restrictive, so a very limited number of domains were acquired. Persons were permitted to purchase no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was required, i.e. merely Swedish persons, commercial entities and organizations were able to book a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was loosened notably and, accordingly, the number of dot SE domains has been rising each year.
